Another roof r230 thread... :(

The trunk opens, the flaps are folded out and the roof starts moving but halfway (at the top) it stops and I cant close it with the switch. I can add that the first time or two the top retracted down and it looked like it was in the "easy pack" mode. But now it will stop before lowering down from the highest position.

If I turn of the car and wait 5-10 sec, the roof falls forwards and in position against the windscreen. After that, I can use the switch in the car and close the roof and the trunk.

According to the Vario roof aid document its probably the switches at the flaps (according to the picture and description) One of the flaps are hanging slightly but it engages the top switch when opening. If I move the flap with my hand I can hear it click. I dont have access to a star system and here in Sweden Indys are not common.

Have anyone here had the flaps problem and if so, where in the opening process did it stop?

Thanks for your info. However, I read my first post again and maybe I wasnt clear.

When the trunk is fully opened and the flaps are opened, one is hanging slightly. But not so much that it doesnt touches the switch. If I carefully bend the flap towards the closed position, the microswitch clicks (not pushed in). When I let the flap go it clicks again (switch pushed in). So I think its engaged. But I´ll try to adjust it. If I open the trunk normally the flaps are tight against the trunk.

These flaps are strange, each one has a little gearbox, as I recall, if they are not working perfectly, the whole roof stops.

I just got in from the garage. Adjusting the flap didnt help. I suppose I should start looking for a Star clone.

Email sent.

The switch on the flap may not be operating with the first push of the flap

Thanks for the email. I suppose I need to use a multimeter and measure the switches.

You can use the ohms setting, they will all washout OK with switch cleaner, often the operating bar is not being pressed far enough to close or open the switch as the case may be.

With "washout OK with switch cleaner", do you simply mean that they will get cleaned and make contact again after using switch cleaner? (sorry, english isnt my first language)

Jag prata mycket bättre Svensk än jag kan skriva :D You are doing well :D

Yes just spray the cleaner in to the little opening and all fine again.

I must have cleaned more than 2000 in my life time and never replaced one

Maybe we should continue in swedish to keep you up to date ;)

Regarding the switches, have you experienced this with any of the switches on your SL´s? That cleaning have helped? Im worried its something else, like the control module being faulty or some valve for the hydralics. And its typical, I have it for sale right now...

I hope so. I have googled so my eyes and fingers are sore ;)

On the Mbworld forum somebody had problems with a broken cabel (in his case, the messages about closing and opening on the dash didnt go away).
It was were the roof folds above the back window. I know that I have seen a cable (probably a black sleeve) that has some wear and tear because of the folding right there.

And then I remembered that one time when I tried to open the roof it stopped, I did let go of the switch, pushed it to open again, the roof moved 10 cm and stopped. I repeated maybe 4 times and finally it was all the way down and the trunk closed. I closed the roof (worked normally) and then tried to open but then it the problem was back.

Just thought maybe I have a broken cable as well. Because I think the roof stops when the cabel is somewhere at the most "bent" angle.
But I will buy some cleaner today and try with that first.

Jönköping sounds more nice than Huddinge but there are nice areas in Huddinge as well ;)

The cables are for the front locks.

I have the roof closing sequence I can send, and I will print off the opening function as well.

Ok, so here is an update to my thread a year later. First of all, before July this year I didn't had the time continue searching for the error (which was foolish of me since it turned out to be easy to fix). Its difficult to get hold of anybody that has a STAR or STAR clone outside the dealers here in Sweden. Anyway, in beginning of August I got hold of a guy that lived quite near me.

The codes were that there was a cable shorted or broken to the sensors in the roof. About a week ago, a friend of mine had the time to look at it. And we found the broken cables. It were the cables that runs from the front of the roof (sensors S69/2 and S69/3) and down the c-pillar (b-pillar on our cars? ;) ). The crack was where the cables runs down into the trunk. After 12 years of folding the wear and tear of the cables was to much. So about £5 and 3 hours later the roof was working again as it should.

But maybe someone could benefit from this experience...

duly noted, tho i think i might shift mine on before this and other nightmares crop up . like no brakes sbc, no suspension ,abc and no gears ,shifter. shame because there is not a nicer looking car... but i think if i have a car such that it is prudent to join the aa relay service i ought to consider an alternative that does not . forgot to add getting caught out with a roof that wont close or only opens half way ... i so much appreciate my 01 clk 320
